Guided visualizations are a type of mindfulness practice that utilizes your five senses and imagination to create a relaxed state. Just as your body can create feelings of tension in response to stress, it can also create feelings of relaxation in response to calming input and thoughts. Utilizing a guided visualization can allow for exploration of a safe space in one’s mind to encourage a sense of relaxation.
Guided visualizations can help to create a place in your mind that is peaceful and relaxing, either from a memory of a safe place, such as a favorite spot on a beach, or by creating an entirely new space in your imagination. It is whatever space is peaceful and soothing to you.
It is important to use all of your senses when in this space; for example, considering the feeling of the sunlight on your skin, the feeling of the sand pulling from beneath your toes at the water’s edge, or the smell of the salt air.
You can choose to use these in individualized or group settings. It is encouraged to provide an environment that is conducive, such as a quiet and dimmed lighting. You may allow participants to draw what they see if that helps them to focus. You can choose to include physical elements that fit the theme, such as sunscreen and sand for the beach.
Happy visualizing!
